Creating a Classic quiz is a relatively easy process once you understand Canvas' basic quiz settings. This page navigates the steps to create your exam and develop its settings.

How to set up and build a Canvas quiz

Image showing the steps to create a quiz1(A) - Select Quizzes on the course navigation menu, which takes you to the quizzes index page. You will see existing quizzes and will be able to create new ones.

1(B) - Select + Quiz in the upper right hand corner to create a new quiz.

2 - You will see two tabs: Details and Questions, at the top of your new quiz. Name the quiz and add quiz instructions via the Details tab. Add questions to your exam via the Questions tab. Adding questions to your exam will be covered later in this module. Beneath the tabs, you will find all of the quiz settings that determine how the quiz functions and how it will be graded. The images below show most of the settings you can modify to set up your quiz.

It is a best practice to use specific names for your quizzes, for example, "Exam 1 (Spring 2022)," instead of just "Exam 1." This could prevent issues with sharing and importing your quiz at a later time.

4 - Quiz Instructions: This area is called the Rich Content Editor (RCE). Use the RCE to add text instructions, images, files, media and anything else that provides students with what they need to know to take the quiz.

5 - Quiz Type: Choose the quiz type. The options are practice or graded quiz and graded or ungraded survey.

By default, it will be assigned to the "Assignments" group, but if you have created additional groups, you can select from the dropdown menu here.

    Options

7 - Shuffle Answers: Select this option if you would like to shuffle the order of answers for each instance of the quiz.

Time Limit: A clock counts down the time allowed, auto saves, and then closes the quiz when the time expires. Please note: You can add additional time to accommodate individual students in the "Moderate This Quiz" function.

8 - Allow Multiple Attempts: Set the number of attempts and which score to record if the quiz is graded if you want students to have multiple quiz attempts. Choices are to keep the highest score, the latest score, or an average of all scores.

9 - Show Answers: Set these options to determine when and how students will be able to see correct and incorrect answers.

10 - Show one question at a time: Select this option if you want students to see one question at a time. You can also choose to lock each question through this option.

    Quiz Restrictions

Image with numbers showing the location of the various quiz settings.11 - Require an access code - An access code is an additional layer of security that students will need to gain access to the quiz.

Filter IP Addresses: The IP address specifies where the quiz must be taken.

    Assign

12 - Assign to: The default setting is to assign the quiz to "Everyone," but you can assign to specific students, sections, and/or for specific due dates. *The image reflects the previous Assign to feature

Due: Enter your desired due date. If you do not include a due date, the exam will be available to students for the entire term.

Available from and Until: The available from and until dates are optional dates that can be added to restrict the availability of the exam. The available from date states the time and day that your students can start taking the exam. The until date states the time and day that your students can no longer take the exam. The until date must be the same as or after the due date.

+ Add: Add another set of dates for that specific section or student(s) if you want to assign different dates to a cross-listed section or individual student(s), in your quiz. Your quiz will be made available to those specific sections or students at their designated time. No need to make another exam.

13 - Cancel or Save: Use cancel if you don't want to save anything you have just done on the page. Once you have completed the settings, you can either save the assignment, or if you are certain that the assignment is ready for students to see, you can select "Save & Publish."
