If you want to use Canvas notifications, this guide will help you manage them. Notifications can be helpful, but only if you are being notified about something you want to know. Below are helpful tips and guides about how to manage Canvas notifications.

 What are Canvas notifications?

Notifications are quick alerts coming from Canvas to an external email or as a text message. Canvas can send notifications of course activities, including announcements and grades. Turning notifications off stops them coming to an external email or phone, but does not stop them from appearing in your Canvas course.

 How to manage notifications

Follow these steps to locate and manage your Canvas notifications:

  Where to find Canvas notifications

All Canvas users can manage their notifications in their accounts. To get to notifications, go first to your account. Then select Notifications.

  How to set Canvas notifications

Canvas has default notifications set for all students. Change these in Account Notification Settings (see image), and have those notifications you want sent immediately, daily, or weekly. You can also turn all or some notifications off. Simply select the image in the same row as the notification, and select your preference from the drop-down menu.

  How to manage notifications in a single course

To manage notifications for a  single course, rather than go through account settings,
go to the course Home page, and select View Course Notifications on the right of the page - above the To Do list. From there, you can enable or disable all notifications for that specific course. Disabling notifications this way disables only external notification, not notifications that pop up inside of Canvas.
