While we like to focus on "passion" and following our dreams, we can't deny that money always works its way into the conversation about jobs and internships. We have support to help you in all things career exploration.

What is Career Readiness?

The Center for Career Readiness Links to an external site. is an office on campus focused on your career and job goals! The folks will help you decide on a major or learn ways to gain experience within your career or industry. They have career assessments, resume templates, mock interview practice, and personal meetings to help your prepare for any type of job search. It is never too early to visit the Center for Career Readiness--even if this is your first semester in college.

How to get career support

You can make an appointment Links to an external site. to visit the Center for Career Readiness or drop-in. The Center for Career Readiness also has document review options to help you find jobs and internships. They also host events Links to an external site. throughout the semester such as alumni career panels and on-campus job fairs. 

If you aren't ready to talk with someone or attend an event yet, they also have templates and do-it-yourself support. You can download examples of cover letters and resumes from their Resources Links to an external site. website or explore career paths with tools like the job outlook handbook or career assessments on their Find Your Career Path Links to an external site. website.

Finding Micro-Internships

Micro-Internships are short-term, paid, professional assignments that are similar to those given to new hires or interns. These projects enable students to demonstrate skills, explore career paths, and build their networks as you seek the right full-time role. Unlike traditional internships, Micro-Internships can take place year-round, typically range from 5 to 40 hours of work, and are due between one week and one month after kick-off.  Using Handshake (the job portal)

Handshake is the Career Readiness platform where you apply for most on-campus jobs, register for Career events, and find community internships and jobs. If you are in the College of Business, you will also use Handshake for your professional development activities and events. Create your Handshake account and set up your profile to match with opportunities.

How to register for Handshake

  1. Go to Handshake Links to an external site. (Links to an external site.)
  2. Enter your .edu email address and a unique password
  3. The Center for Career Readiness will approve your account and send you an email confirmation
  4. Build your profile with your major and career goals to see the most relevant job postings

You can become an electrician, plumber, airline mechanic, and so much more through trade learning. Only you can decide where your heart, career goals, and abilities lead. You will always be a UNC Bear: any credits you earn will stay in your record if you change your mind and want to graduate.
