Quizzes in Mathematics and Sciences - Overview
Canvas Classic Quizzes is equipped with tools to display mathematic and scientific notations using the Equation Editor and LaTeX anywhere the rich content editor is available.
Formula Questions
The "Formula Question" question type in quizzes allows you to generate a set of unique questions from a single formula. This function is particularly helpful when creating practice quizzes with unlimited attempts. Learners can practice as many times as they wish and always have a unique problem to solve.
- Works best with rational numbers (numbers such as
π,
√22, and
e are converted to numeral/decimal form)
- Ideal for practice
To view examples of the "Formula Question" type see questions 1, 2, and 3 in the "Examples: Quizzes in Maths and Sciences" practice quiz.
Numerical Answer
"Numerical Answer" question types must be written individually, and they allow for the the questions to be set using rational and irrational numbers. Answers must be submitted in decimal form with a specified range or degree of precision.
To view an example of a "Numerical Answer" question see question 6 in the "Examples: Quizzes in Maths and Sciences" practice quiz.
LaTeX Equation Editor
The equation editor uses LaTeX for math and science. It is ideal for typing formulas and equations in Canvas because it makes text editable and accessible. It is available everywhere the rich content editor is available.
You can use the equation editor to provide answer options for "Multiple Choice" and "Multiple Answers" question types. Learners can also use the equation editor to answer essay questions. It is important to note that students should have an opportunity to practice using the equation editor prior to the test.
To view examples of the equation editor in quiz questions, see questions 4, 5, and 6 in the "Examples: Quizzes in Maths and Sciences" practice quiz.
