Quiz Moderation
The Quiz Moderation page provides the opportunity to observe your students as they take their exam and allows you to make several modifications that can aid you and students as issues arise. You can also set accommodations for time allowed and/or the ability to retake an exam using the tools in Quiz Moderation.
Welcome to the Moderation Page
How do I get to the moderation page from the home page?
Step 1 - Select Quizzes from the course menu
Step 2 - Select the quiz you want to moderate
Step 3 - Select "Moderate This Quiz" from the right hand menu
The opening screen of the moderation page allows you to observe students in real-time as they progress through an exam. It also provides easy access to tools that will help you add additional time and attempts.
The Moderate Quiz page is arranged into several columns:
1 - Student: This column identifies the student. Select a student's name to see their exam after they have completed it.
2 - Attempt: This column indicates how many times each student has attempted the exam.
3 - Time: This column shows how much time students have remaining in this attempt in real time, indicated by a blue clock next to the students' names. Select the blue clock to extend the time allowed on the current attempt.
4 - Attempts Left: This column shows the number of attempts students have.
5 - Score: The numbers in this column are the most recent scores on a quiz/exam. If you have not graded the exam, this score shows the total points for only auto-graded questions.
6 -
This column represents two different functions. Click the refresh icon at the top of the column to see the moderation screen updates with the most recent data. In each row, select " " (edit icon) to add time and attempts for the student on that row.You can address issues that can arise during an exam by using this information. Here are some more specific instructions to deal with the most common issues:
How do I add time and attempts to a student's exam?
Two ways to add time and additional attempts
Single Student - Select the edit icon next to the student name from the "Moderate Quiz" page. Once selected, the student extensions window will appear that will allow you to add extra time and attempts.
Multiple Students - Add time to multiple students exams by selecting the checkbox next to the desired students names. A blue edit icon will appear at the bottom of the moderate quiz chart. After you have selected all of the students, you can select the blue edit icon and the student extensions window will appear. This option allows you to add time for multiple students instead of modifying each student individually.
Adding Time as students are taking an exam
If the student is currently taking the exam you can add time by clicking the blue clock icon . After you select the icon, a window will open that will allow you to add time for the student. This is the best option for adding time when students are currently taking the exam. In addition, if you added an end time to your exam in the settings and the student asks for more time, this option will extend the end time for that specific student. Unfortunately, you can not do this for multiple students at the same time. Each student needs to be extended individually. next to the attempts time
How do I view student exams through the Quiz Log?
The Quiz Log is a tool that gives you a peek into what your students are doing during their exam. It cannot be used to prove something as serious as cheating, but it can give you information that you can use to ask questions. The log gives you a time stamped record of Canvas data points or events.
You can find the Quiz Log for a particular student by clicking the student's name on the moderation page. Select "Quiz Log" in the upper right hand corner of the screen. This student's log gives you a glimpse into events and activities that were recorded when the student was taking the exam. If you are viewing the log in real time you will need to refresh your page or click the refresh button,
, in the upper right hand corner of the page.1 - You will see the date and session information at the top of the screen. If the student has multiple attempts, select between the attempts to see the different logs.
The area under the session information is called the action log. This area gives you time stamped events on your student's exam. You will see several types of events in this area.
2 - The "answered the following question(s)" event identifies the questions that the student answered. If you see multiple questions answered at the same time, it is because Canvas is saving the students work. If you see that the student answered the question multiple times with a different time stamp, it means the student changed their answer for that question.
3 - The "viewed (and possibly read) the following questions" event informs you that the student is active on the quiz page but has not answered the question(s).
4 - The "stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page" event informs you that the student has focused elsewhere away from Canvas.
5 - The "resumed" event informs when the student's focus returns to the quiz page.
As a reminder, this tool is designed as a student support tool and should not be used as the sole source to prove that a student has cheated or is cheating on an exam.
