Welcome!

Welcome to UNC's IRIS Project (Improving Rural Interpreter Skills). I’m Schawn Hardesty, IRIS Co-Director. In this self-directed course, we’ve gathered selections from our rural interpreter education program Connections, Opportunities, Resources, and Education (CORE) Initiative as well as samples of IRIS-produced media and outside resources to create a self-directed, module-based course about rural interpreting.

This combined course will provide interpreter educators, mentors, students, and practitioners:

  • An introduction to the IRIS Project and its rural interpreter training, CORE Initiative
  • An opportunity to explore the content, activities, and structure of IRIS’s program and resources
  • An interactive discussion space that provides a forum for interpreter educators, mentors, students, and practitioners to consider the challenges and opportunities in rural interpreting

Let's begin with an orientation to Canvas, IRIS's online Learning Management System (LMS). Click NEXT in the lower right-hand corner to proceed through the Module.
